Emily Abbott scored 16 points to lead the No. 3 nationally ranked University of Windsor Lancers over the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 75-49.
The Lancers are now 17-1 and currently hold a four point lead over the Western Mustangs for first place in the OUA West. Laurier holds down the sixth and final playoff spot with a 7-11 record.
Windsor jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and finished the frame with a 20-8 advantage. The Hawks improved in the second, but the Lancers still increased their lead by five more points to go into the break with a 42-25 lead.
The Lancers came out strong in the third and doubled the Hawks 20-10. Laurier finally outscored the Lancers in the fourth quarter 14-13 but it was too little, too late.
Windsor shot just under 50 percent from the floor with 48.4 shooting percentage and went 50 percent from beyond the arc. Laurier shot 30.6 percent from the floor and went 2-12 in three-point shooting.
The top scorers for the Hawks were Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) with 11 points and Alena Luciani (Oakville, Ont.) with ten. Adamczyk was also the squad’s top rebounder with six.
For the Lancers, Emily Abbott (Calgary) led the way with a 16 point effort. She was followed by Bojana Kovacevic (Windsor, Ont.) who had 14 and Shavaun Reaney (Sherwood Park, Alta.) who scored 11. Windsor’s top rebounders were Reaney with eight and Jessica Clemencon (St. Rambert, France) who had six.
Next up Laurier will host the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday, February 10th at 6 p.m.
