The Carleton University Ravens women’s basketball team recorded their eighth straight win on Saturday night as they defeated the Laurentian University Lady Vees 55-39 on the road.

The Ravens tight defence didn’t give the Voyageurs much of a chance to run their offence, resulting in shot clock violations and turnovers in Carleton’s favour. The team took advantage of possessions with Jessica Resch (Orleans, Ont.) hitting a three to take the lead with three minutes to go at the end of the first. With an easy layup by Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) and a 12-footer from Ines Jelic (London, Ont.), the Ravens ended the first with a 15-9 lead.

Laurentian was unable to defend the Ravens offence, including Jennifer Stoqua (Ottawa) who hit a left-handed pick-and-roll early in the second quarter. With defence staying strong, Laurentian didn’t sink enough to take control of the game. The half saw Carleton leading 26-23.

Carleton kept up momentum in the second half, with Resch hitting key field goals, including a two that extended the Ravens lead to 12 with four to go in the third. Laurentian was unable to come up with much, banking just two points in the quarter.

The Lady Vees brought a heightened energy in the fourth, starting with Norma-Jean Roberts (Burnaby, BC) hitting a field goal just four seconds in. The attempt to make a run against the Ravens wasn’t enough as Laurentian was hit with two technicals and weren’t making any impact with their full court press.

Resch and Jelic both produced double digits for the Ravens, netting 17 and 16 points respectively, while Roberts was the sole Lady Vee to do the same with 13.

The Ravens narrowly out-rebounded the Lady Vees, 37-35.

This ends Laurentian’s nine game home winning streak and improves the Ravens record to 17-4. Next weekend the Ravens are on the road, facing RMC Friday night and Queens Saturday night. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
