Spears Split Weekend Series
By Niagara Spears Staff
July 22, 2007
For the second straight year, the Niagara Varsity Spears
have finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record.
The Spears (8-0) dismantled the Brantford Bisons 45-14 (5-3)
in a game played at Wayne Gretzky Park on Saturday. The
Junior Spears (6-2) had a decidedly tougher time, falling to
the undefeated London Falcons (8-0) 49-10 in London on
Sunday.
The senior Spears got off to a slow start, giving up a
touchdown and a field goal on the Bisons’ first two
possessions. Ricky Savage’s 3-yard plunge to open the second
quarter narrowed the Bisons lead to 10-7. Starting
quarterback Alex Radoujuic then ran the ball in from 3 yards
out on the Spears next possession to give them a 14-10 lead.
The teams traded field goals to close the half, as Spears
kicker Julian Tropea nailed a 41-yard attempt and Brantford
kicker Rory McDonell was good from 29 yards out to narrow
the Spears lead to 17-13 at halftime. The Spears exploded
for 21 third quarter points, as Ricky Savage scored his
second major of the game on a 1-yard dive, quarterback Evan
Burke connected with Jason Gagnon on an 11-yard TD pass, and
Jerimy Hipperson scored a 16-yard rushing major to give the
Spears a 38-13 lead. The Bisons could only mange a rouge in
the second half, as Spears quarterback Nick Coutu connected
with Jedd Gardner on a 2-yard TD pass to close out the
scoring. Final score: Niagara Spears (8-0) 45 – Brantford
Bisons (5-3) 14.

In junior action, the Spears held tough with the London
Falcons, trailing 13-7 at halftime as Andrew Barry stormed
up the middle on a 22-yard TD run in the first quarter to
briefly take a 7-6 lead. A bigger and more physical Falcons
team wore the Spears down in the second half however, as
London racked up 5 majors en route to a 49-10 victory. A
27-yard field goal from the toe of Jon Demetriades accounted
for Niagara’s only other points. On a brighter note, running
back Devon Egerter became the first player in Spears history
to crack 1,000 yards rushing Sunday, finishing with 1,002
