It was a cold, rainy Halloween game in Mississauga as the former Brampton now North Bay Battalion blank the Steelheads 3-0 in front of 1512 down at the Hershey Chocolate box.
The game wasn’t all dull in Mississauga but mainly for selfish reasons. I played hockey growing up. I worked in some venues where I am around some great players. Tonight was the first time I stepped onto the ice prior to puck drop with both teams lining up for the national anthem. I was part of the crew that held the Canada flag during the playing of Oh Canada. It was a small role but to me it felt like a dream was reached. I am someone who appreciates the small things in life and I will forever remember that moment! To top things off, during the second intermission, I was selected by Aly Munro who is the Steelheads in house MC currently working her 3rd season, along with my buddy Tyler , Derek , and lovely girlfriend of mine Felicia to participate in musical chairs on the ice. It was a tight contest and I should have won but you can only be victorious if you remember what you are playing! All in all it was a night I will never forget!
Their wasn’t a lot of offense in the game. All three goals North Bay scored, not to discredit the Battalion and not to take anything away from the effort of Spencer Martin but they weren’t by any means great goals. Some great net crashing by the Battalion led to their chances and essentially won them the game. Credit to Matthew Santos on the home coming though. One goal and 2 assists! He had a tidy group at the chocolate box tonight cheering him on. Local boy from Etobicoke.
The boys were flat footed tonight but Its safe to say, when you have a good group of boys like the Steelheads, you can expect a better effort Sunday against the Ice dogs.
I want to say something quickly before moving on to Sebastian’s pick 3. Jr hockey in Mississauga is a hidden gem. I recently relocated back to Kitchener to finish my studies online due to some personal issues. People think I waste money. I want to crunch some numbers:
Kitchener: Walk up
2 tickets about 30 rows off the ice- $43.50 (when buying online add $6)
2 Hot dogs plus 2 pops plus 1 medium popcorn= $30.00
Parking- Heavily congested with about a 10 min wait trying to exit.
$79.50 When ordering online, $73.50 when buying at box office.
Mississauga: Walk up
2 tickets on the glass-$33.80 (No online fees ever, Box office covers it)
2 Hot dogs plus 2 pops and 1 medium popcorn= $19.00
Parking- Free, Close, Non congested, very open parking lot.
*Drive from Kitchener is 45 mins on a good day, 1/4 tank of gas to get us to and from. $11.00 ( Honda Civic)
$63.80 for a savings of $15.70. 34 games a year that’s a grand savings of $533.80!!!!
I actually save money coming to Mississauga. Now factor in I have season tickets so I save a little more but the figures above are regular price. No line up’s for bathrooms, concessions, its worth the drive. If you want me to go further, Sean Day, Connor McDavid, Spencer Martin, Dylan Strome and other elite players in the OHL play weekly in the Chocolate box here in Mississauga. Former players like Stuart Percy played here in Mississauga as well. The cheapest on stub hub you can watch Stuart Percy currently play for is $102.00 in Toronto. Next year, the cheapest you will be able to see McDavid for is going to be around $100 a ticket, no food included. You can see these kids now for less then HALF THAT PRICE!!!! Take advantage of it! These are the next wave of stars! Fans are always complaining about the ticket prices at the ACC every time guys like Stamkos, Tavares, Crosby, Perry. THEY ALL PLAYED IN THIS LEAGUE! No, the level of competition is not the same but every day you can see a group of twenty best friends come together and for sixty mins are playing to achieve their dreams and in cases you get to see the next best star! It’s time to support the local product Mississauga! Don’t miss out on a chance to get a glimpse of the future. Time to get hooked!
Sebastian’s Pick 3!
1) Mathew Santos, Forward for the North bay Battalion. 1 goal and 2 assists in the winning effort. The winger from Toronto seams to be making most of the opportunity this year on a younger squad.
2) Spencer Martin, Goaltender Mississauga Steelheads. Took the loss but stopped 35-38 shots! I am sure he would like to have the first goal back but none the less he played a tidy effort! Don’t look now but Spencer is now top 5 in the OHL for qualified goalies in save percentage. Not to put high expectations on the kid but id expect him to get comfy in that spot as I believe he is one of the 10 best goalies nationwide in the CHL!
3) Aly Munro. The teams slogan right now is Hardworking Hockey! But that doesn’t just mean on the ice. Not sure what her injury was but she was walking the stairs, doing countless laps around a pretty big arena all while wearing a shoulder sling. She is the definition of hard working as is the whole staff! Pure dedication Aly, Doesn’t go unnoticed!
To go a little further, people only see what goes on the ice. The guys and girl’s behind the scenes are some of the most hospitable people in sports. Scott, Paul, Nicole, Stephen and the many others go to far and beyond to put on the best in house show in the league and yes I fully believe it is the best in the league. The team may not win every game, but people wont leave disappointed. You could be the lucky fan that leave’s with a Pandora gift card, or one of the many other prizes you can win but you have to be there to win!
Have to throw a shout out to the adults that came in costume. Yeah, that means you too Justin or Elmo. Which ever you prefer. Haha.
Also shout out to DJ Shakes! Great job on the music tonight!

* On a side note, I just ask everyone be patient with my spelling, punctuation and other errors. I am going to be taking weekend English course. English has never been one of my stronger subjects. It is something that I am going to address and improve so I just ask that you bear with me please. It will get better as the season goes on.
