Top Steelheads Performers of October 2014

Mississauga Steelheads

October has come and gone once again and through 11 games in the month the Steelheads finished with 4 wins.

In order to be successful in this league, you have to win more than 4 games a month. But their are a lot of positives moving forward. After each post game blog I have done I have been doing something called Sebastian’s pick 3. I choose my own 3 stars of the game. That is pretty much what I am going to do now but instead I will be choosing the top 3 for the month of October.

3rd star of the month: Sean Day, Defenceman #4

Sean is in is sophomore year. Coming off of a rookie season that saw him finish with a brutal -35 and 16 points in 60 games. Well this year he has bulked up, and has taken a more prominent role on a team looking to build on a first round playoff exit the season prior. Through 10 games, Sean has 2 goals and 6 assists and is a +3. Sean see’s regular power play time and is a constant threat on the blue line. He can provide plenty of scoring opportunities with the hard shot from the point and can provide many scoring opportunities with that crisp pass of his. He has not disappointed this year and he will continue to grow. Sean is currently with the U-17 team in Sarnia Ontario.

2nd star of the month: Spencer Martin, Goaltender #30

Spencer is now in his 4th season with the Steelheads, 3rd as the starter and quite possibly his last season in the Ontario hockey league. The 19 year old, 3rd round pick of the Colorado Avalanche will be looked upon night in and night out as the Steelheads try to improve on an early playoff exit last year. Earlier this year Spencer signed and ELC with the Av’s and his play shows why. The Steelheads are a team that gives up on average 37 shots every night. That being said, Spencer sees a lot of rubber. The fact that he has a .920 speaks for it self! He carries a 5-5-1 record currently. Moving forward I expect Spencer if healthy will see about 90% of games remaining. In my opinion, he is setting himself up nicely to get a nice hard look from hockey Canada for the upcoming world Jr tournament.

1st star of the month: Bryson Cianfrone, Forward #19

To me Bryson is one of the most underrated forwards in the league. Albeit he hasn’t played a lot in this league as a 19 year old. He has proved to be a late bloomer but none the less he has shown he belongs in this league . The captain of the Steelheads has produced at a point per game pace this year and we can expect that to continue. He plays the power play, pk, and is really effective on 5 on 5 play. Although he is not the biggest player on the ice, he wears his heart on his sleeve every night. Rarely takes a shift off. So far this year through 12 games the Stoney Creek native has 2 goals 11 assists and is a +2 through 12 games. He will be relied on heavily to continue with his offense on this team that struggles to score goals at times.

The upcoming schedule see’s the Mississauga Steelheads take on:

Niagara Ice Dogs, Sunday November 2nd. 2:00 pm

Niagara Ice Dogs, Friday November 7th, 7:30 pm

Sudbury Wolves, Friday November 14th, 7:30 pm. (Hopefully the beautiful faithful from Sudbury will come take in a game on the road) This game the team will be honoring the longest serving mayor the city of Mississauga has ever had,  Hazel McCallion. Come out for what will be a wonderful night. She loves this team and would love nothing more than for fans to pack the place.
