Stoney Creek ventured into the Jack Gatecliff Arena Friday
night to try and steal a win against the St. Catharines
Mountainview Homes Falcons. Reason being, the Warriors had
loss every match between the two clubs so far this season.
The Warriors had the right idea in the first period,
grabbing the first goal of the game. In his 11th game for
Stoney Creek this year, Mike Kavanagh scored his 8th goal of
the season with under 5 minutes to play in the period.
Warriors leading scorer Andrew Dovey assisted on the goal
that beat Falcons netminder Steele De Fazio.
The period ended with the Warriors owning a 1-0 lead over
the Falcons, though St. Catharines led in shots on net at
13-9.
Stoney Creek scored the second goal of the game, in the
second period, on the power-play while Falcons forward Ryan
Elbers sat in the penalty box for slashing. Dovey scored at
the 7:49 minute mark of the period, his second point of the
game, with assists to Mike Gibson and Sean Murray.
The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second
period when Jordan Gignac beat the Falcons goalie, going
upstairs over top of De Fazio as he lay down. Greg Bryl and
Riley Steeves added helpers on the play.
St. Catharines continued their slump in the second period
as they allowed a fourth goal at the 13:05 mark of the
period. Jamie Osborne made the game 4-0 in favour of the
Warriors, with an assist going to Gignac.
Ryan Elbers finally broke through Warriors goaltender
Dylan Ellis with a little over 5 minutes left in the period
to make the score 4-1. Vladimir Bessonov grabbed a helper on
the play that woke up most of the Falcons fans inside JGA.
The Warriors skated into the second intermission holding
on to a 4-1 lead, though the Falcons continued to outshoot
the Warriors 12-5.
Jordan Gignac grabbed his second goal of the game and
third point to give Stoney Creek a commanding 5-1 lead over
the Falcons to start the third period. Osborne recorded an
assist on the goal at 3:51.
The Falcons attempted a comeback after Gignac's goal when
Riley Sheahan scored a power-play goal, with help from JT
MacDonald at the 8:55 mark of the third.
Brandon McGregor brought the Falcons to within two goals
when he made it 5-3 for the Warriors with a goal just past
the halfway mark of the period. Elbers assisted on the
even-strength goal.
The Falcons came within one goal with 58 seconds left in
the game when Vladimir Bessonov netted the Falcons fourth
goal of the game. With their goalie pulled, the Falcons
pounded the Warriors net, even drawing a penalty shot.
Dylan Ellis turned away Riley Sheahan's tying goal on the
penalty shot attempt and the Falcons couldn't produce the
tying goal of the game within the last minute of the game.
What was a dry game for 58 minutes for Falcons fans turned
into one of the most exciting displays of hockey the hockey
club has seen so far this season under the Jack Gatecliff
Arena roof.
That was the second penalty shot Ellis stopped for Stoney
Creek Friday night, earning him the 2nd star of the game
along with making 43 saves on the night.
The Falcons are back inside the Jack Gatecliff Arena next
week when the Port Colborne Sailors come to town for the
second time this season. |
