The Stoney Creek Warriors will be well represented at the
Golden Horseshoe League All-Star game January 14.
Four players were selected to play in the annual contest,
which will be held at Port Colborne’s West Side Arena.
Mike Kavanagh, Greg Bryl, Jordan Gignac
and Cayle Creen will play for team dark. They will play as a
team alongside traditional rivals from Niagara Falls, Fort
Erie and Wheatfield.
Team white will be represented by
players from St. Catharines, Welland, Thorold and Port
Colborne.
In his second year with Stoney Creek,
Gignac has been lighting it up all season, and sits 14th
overall in league scoring with 18 goals and 22 assists for
40 points.
Despite missing almost the entire month
of October with injuries, Kavanagh and Bryl have formed one
of the league’s top lines. Both players are Stoney Creek
natives.
Kavanagh is 20th in league scoring with
16 goals and 19 assists, while Bryl has recorded 8 goals and
19 assists for 27 points.
Rookie defenceman Cayle Creen has been
a reliable player for the Warriors this season. In 26 games,
he has three goals and 12 assists.
Bryl, who played the past few seasons
with Grimsby in the Niagara Jr. C loop, said it was a
privilege to be selected.
“This is my last year and it’s great to
be selected alongside one of my longtime friends Mike
Kavanagh,” he said.
Bryl, who was hampered with a hand
injury that kept him out of the line up for 10 games, said
his season so far is not what he expected.
“I wouldn’t say it’s been
disappointing, but the injury really set me back. I’m just
starting to get my groove back.”
Bryl said he is confident the Warriors
will make a serious drive for top spot in the GHL with 15
games left in the regular season.
“The team has made some great moves
lately,” he said. “We brought in a great goaltender (Patrick
Sullivan) and he’s a great guy in the room and gives us a
lot of confidence.”
Gignac, who earned the GHL’s Most
Gentlemanly Player award in his first season with the
Warriors, said he was honoured to be selected for the
all-star team.
“I’m looking forward to the game,” said
the 18-year-old Hamilton native. “I hope they keep us
together as one line.”
Tickets for the GHL All-Star game are
available at all Warriors home games, or can be purchased at
the Port Colborne West Side Arena on game night. |
