The Stoney Creek Warriors are off to a perfect start
in 2008, after handing the second place St. Catharines
Falcons a 4-2 loss at Valley Park Arena Jan. 3.
After a scoreless first period, the Warriors jumped out to a
2-0 lead early in the second.
Adam Montgomery scored just 17 seconds
into the period, assisted by Greg Bryl and Mike Kavangh.
Just over two minutes later, Jason
Popek jammed one home on a pretty feed from Jordan Poole and
David Ruberto.
Mike Stone brought the Falcons to
within one goal at the midway mark of the period. Steven
Ceccanese and Brad Jackson earned the helpers.
The Warriors were quick on the board
once again to open the third period, as Kavanagh tipped a
shot from the point on the power play to give Stoney Creek a
two-goal cushion. Cayle Creen and Bryl earned the assists.
At the 6:13 mark of the third, Chris
Garbacz closed the gap to one goal, assisted by Brandon
McGregor.
Despite a flurry of offence in the
final three minutes, the Falcons were unable to tie the
game. Warriors goaltender Dylan Ellis was spectacular in
net, turned aside all rubber sent his way.
The Falcons pulled goaltender Steele
DeFazio with just over a minute left in the game. Despite
the extra attacker, Bryl was able to squeeze by the Falcons’
defence and pot an empty net goal to give the Warriors a 4-2
victory.
The win allowed the Warriors to move
into third place, one point ahead of Welland.
The Warriors are back in action
tonight, with a tilt against the first-place Niagara Falls
Canucks.
On Saturday, the Warriors will complete
their three-games in three-nights schedule by hosting Port
Colborne at Valley Park Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m. |
