Jordan Gignac scored two goals to lead the Stoney Creek
Warriors to a 9-5 victory over the visiting Fort Erie
Meteors in GHL action Thursday, Nov. 8. The win on home ice
snapped a nasty losing streak for the Warriors, who had
dropped five straight games in the confines of Valley Park
Arena.
The game also marked the return of the team's
inspirational leader and captain, Mike Kavanagh, who has
been sidelined with an injury since Oct. 2. Also returning
from injury was Greg Bryl, who has also been out of the line
up since early October.
The Warriors opened the scoring early in the first, when
Gignac roofed a nice goal over the shoulder of Meteor's
netminder Jeff Broeker.
The Meteors scored two straight power play markers to
take the lead. The first goal was netted by Lucas Van Natter
late in the first period. Corey Giroux made it 2-1 with his
power play goal just 23 seconds into the second frame.
However, the Warriors answered the call with four
straight goals to take a 5-2 lead. Sean Murray, Jason Popek,
Gignac and Kavanagh netted the goals. Picking up assists
were Jordan Winger (2), Murray, Gignac, Riley Steeves, Adam
Montgomery and Mike Gibson. The Kavanagh goal was a power
play marker.
The Meteors scored a late goal in the second to close the
gap to 5-3.
Midway through the third, Steve Walters made it 5-4.
However, the Warriors regained a two-goal lead just 21
seconds later when Justin Sanderson netted his first goal of
the season. Winger and Montgomery earned the assists.
Stoney Creek put the game out of reach with a flurry of
goals over a four minute stretch. Bryl on the power play,
Andrew Dovey with a short-handed empty net goal, and David
Ruberto made it 9-4 Warriors.
Dan Krug added a late goal to make the final 9-5.
Garrett Driscoll earned the win in nets, facing 44 shots.
The Warriors managed 42 shots in the Meteors net.
Stoney Creek will travel to St. Catharines tomorrow
(Friday, Nov. 9) and then close out a three-games in
three-nights stretch at home Saturday, Nov. 10 when they
face the Wheatfield Blades.
The Nov. 10 game is We Remember night, as the Warriors
will honour the brave men and women who have served our
country at home and abroad. This Remembrance Day tribute
will feature a Colour Party from the Stoney Creek Legion.
All veterans are admitted free. Game time at Valley Park
Arena is 7:30 p.m. |
