The Stoney Creek Warriors kicked off their 2007/08 Golden
Horseshoe League regular season with a come-from-behind tie
in Niagara Falls Sept. 14 and a 6-2 win over Port Colborne
in the team's home opener Sept. 15.
Against the Canucks, the Warriors were down 2-0 until
midway through the third period. Shorthanded, Andrew Dovey
set up Mike Kavanagh who beat Niagara Falls netminder Ryan
Ludzik to bring the Warriors within one goal.
Ludzik, who made numerous outstanding saves during the
game, continued to frustrate the Warriors until the Dovey
scored a powerplay marker with just 11 seconds left in the
game. The goal was unassisted.
Despite outshooting the Canucks, the Warriors were unable
to score the game winner in overtime and the game ended in a
2-2 draw.
Garrett Driscoll earned the tie in net for the Warriors.
On Saturday night, before a healthy home town crowd at
Valley Park Arena, the Warriors dominated the visiting
Sailors through three periods en route to a 6-2 victory.
Stoney Creek jumped out to a early lead, scoring just 53
seconds into the first period.
Dovey, with his second in as many games, put the home
team out in front assisted by Jamie Osborne.
There was no further scoring until the second period,
when David DeWildt made in 2-0 assisted by Osborne.
Port Colborne narrowed the deficit to 2-1 when Chris
Longland scored at the 18:44 mark assisted by Miles Torch.
But it was all Stoney Creek in the third period, as the
Warriors reeled off four straight goals to take a
comfortable lead.
Dovey started the goal barrage at the 2:58 mark on the
powerplay, assisted by Kavanagh and Cayle Creen.
Kavanagh then scored his second in as many games at the
7:40 mark, assisted by Aaron Gorka and Mike Gibson.
David Ruberto made it 5-1 when he took a shot from the
side of the net that rebounded off Sailors netminder Brendan
Sullivan. Jordan Radford and Mitchell Merante picked up the
helpers.
Jordan Winger scored two minutes later on a beautiful
shot that beat Sullivan to the high glove side. Jesse Healy
and Marcus Ruberto earned the assists.
John Williamson scored Port Colborne's final goal in the
dying minutes of the third period, assisted by Adam Rudd and
Tyler Tanguay.
Driscoll was outstanding in net for Stoney Creek and
earned the win, stopping 42 of 44 shots.
The Warriors are back in action this Thursday when they
host the Fort Erie Meteors at Valley Park Arena, 7:30 p.m.
The two teams will battle again Saturday, Sept. 22 in Fort
Erie.
Counting exhibition and tournament play, the Warriors are
now undefeated in five games and have posted a 4-1-1 record
over six games. |
